Maker Lab Projects GMP1 and GMP2
These two slideshows are from my class and are mainly to provide resources and guides to those who may need something that can either be donated or upcycled from a variety of places. These are projects curated to ensure that people who are unhoused or may need cost-effective items to ensure they can still be in a habitable environment without having to sacrifice stuff like furniture and hygiene. Now I present to you the two projects that I have worked on which are a cardboard shelf as well as a portable shower for those who may not have access to a shower or furniture.
There were multiple elements that we had to consider when building these projects, especially for the portable shower. We had to make it waterproof somehow so it does not leak. for the cardboard shelf, we had to ensure how much weight it could handle to help with supporting items like laptops and other items. During the thinking process, we had to make sure it was practical enough for people to use. That was critical in the making of these projects because some people do not have places to store these products.
Generally, for both projects, we empathized we mostly looked at the homeless people in the population of Brandford as students who study there. We defined the situation as them not having the necessities that would help them while being unhoused with no proper hygiene or place to store their items. We ideated multiple solutions with cardboard we thought of bedframes, nightstands, and shoe shelves, but ended up with a shelf. For the second project, we thought about water filtration systems, a hydroponics kit, and a mini padel washing machine but ended up having a practical portable shower for those in need of hygiene. The prototyping we got to is when we delved into the work and started finding the materials we needed to get a product showcase done. After building our initial idea we had to make changes on the way to make it more viable for those who need a simple solution, there was a lot of prototyping and changing some of the designs to make it for those to build the product. After finishing the products we tested them to ensure the two goals we had for each project first the cardboard box could hold weight which held up well with three laptops, and the portable shower even though we weren't able to fully immerse the heater yet we were able to use our shower while it was portable.
The projects were very interesting in finding ways to help find solutions to help those in need or unhoused. It took a lot of prototyping to ensure that the product is sufficient in showcasing, which is well worth it in the end if pitching an idea. In the end, it was very well constructed and could be very well in made or real-life testing, the only issue is being able to convert our portable shower to a hot shower as stated, we did make a backup plan which included a heat pack from shelters or stores to heat the water inside then measure it with the thermostat to ensure that you get heated water. That is for the next prototype or project. Thank you for reading and enjoy our two slideshows showcasing the projects.
